DENTAL BRACES: GETTING TO KNOW THE DIFFERENT TYPES

At JVR Dental in Walnut Grove, Langley, we know that very few people are born with perfectly straight teeth. That is why we offer a selection of different braces that can help give you the perfect smile; however, before you get dental braces, getting to know the different types can help you make an informed decision about the best type of braces for your specific needs.

Traditional Braces

Traditional braces are constructed from high-grade stainless steel and are attached to each individual tooth through the use of brackets and dental cement. Each bracket is subsequently linked by a thin archwire, which is designed to put pressure on the teeth, causing them to slowly move into the correct position. On this type of dental braces, the archwire is attached to the brackets using tiny elastics, also known as ligatures or o-rings. These elastics are changed each time your dentist tightens the braces.

Damon Braces

Damon braces are self-ligating, which means that they do not require elastics. Instead, Damon braces feature a slide mechanism that is used to connect the archwire to the brackets. This type of dental braces provides gentler treatment, requires fewer dental visits, and can produce faster results, as the teeth are able to move on their own without needing an adjustment. Damon braces are becoming an increasingly popular choice, as they are extremely easy to keep clean and cause less friction and, therefore, pain as the teeth move.

Invisalign Braces

Invisalign braces are a type of clear aligner that resembles a mouth guard and can be used instead of traditional braces or Damon braces. Each clear aligner is custom made for the patient and can easily be removed to allow for eating and cleaning; however, each clear aligner is only good for about two weeks of wear before it needs to be replaced by a newly made aligner. The quick change between each custom aligner is designed to help progress the teeth movement one step further towards proper alignment. Invisalign braces are also a good option for ongoing use after a patient has completed their orthodontic treatment, as these aligners will help maintain the new alignment until the teeth have settled down and stopped moving.
