FAMILY DENTAL CARE: VENEERS VS LUMINEERS

Getting to know the differences between Veneers and Lumineers can help you make an informed decision about which option will work best for your particular needs.

At JVR Dental in Walnut Grove, Langley, we always strive to provide our patients with the best family dental care services possible, including our cosmetic dentistry services for porcelain veneers and Lumineers.

How are Veneers and Lumineers Different?

While both veneers and Lumineers are designed to help improve your smile by hiding dental flaws, they each have their own procedure and will affect the state of the original tooth differently. Before determining which option will work best for your needs, it is important to consult with a dental professional to find out more about how each option will work with your specific teeth. Below are some of the differences between Lumineers and veneers that you should keep in mind.

VENEERS

Placing a veneer over a tooth will require some removal and reshaping of the original tooth in order to create a natural appearance. In most cases, your cosmetic dentist will remove about 5mm of the tooth’s enamel, leaving the tooth unprotected until the veneer can be applied. While veneers can often be placed in as little as two dental appointments, some patients may be concerned about permanently removing the tooth’s enamel, as the tooth will be left unprotected if the veneer ever needs to be removed.

LUMINEERS

Even though Lumineers are designed to function in the same way as porcelain veneers, they are less invasive and do not require any changes to the original tooth. Lumineers are also much thinner than veneers, but are just as strong and durable; however, since none of the original tooth is removed during this procedure, Lumineers may look and feel bulkier than veneers do. Compared to veneers, Lumineers can be applied much faster because no time needs to be spent reshaping the teeth beforehand.

How are Veneers and Lumineers Similar?

While Lumineers and veneers have their differences, they are similar in more ways than one, as both options can help improve the overall appearance of misaligned, chipped, or stained teeth. Both veneers and Lumineersare also made from a thin layer of porcelain, making them strong, durable, and easy to maintain. Since neither of these cosmetic dentistry options will stain or change colour over time, patients can easily maintain a whiter smile by sticking to a proper oral healthcare routine.
