NEW YEAR, NEW HOME: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BUILDING A CUSTOM HOME

Are you ready to begin building your new home in the new year? If so – Sayers Contracting in Langley is here to help you manage and explain your ‘New Year, New Home: What You Need to Know About Building a Custom Home’!

Understanding Your Building Schedule

Firstly, you should understand that your building schedule will largely depend on the size and customized scope of your home build in BC. Although we do our best to narrow down a timeline for building a home, there are always variables that involve permits, contractors, weather – and other such unforeseeable things out of our control.

Normally an entire home build can take anywhere from 9-12 months, subject to many contingencies. But the end-product? Worth it!

Ensure You Base Your Build on the Future, Not Just the Present

Because building a home is both an investment of time and money, ensuring you get it right the first time is important. Which means ensuring you are building your home, not just for the present moment, but also for what you project the future to hold as well.

Whether that includes a growing family, a home-based business, or a retirement space for aging parents – keeping future plans in mind will make a massive difference to the liveability and enjoyment of your home for years to come. Rule of thumb; plan at least for a 5-10 year growth window.

Have a Home to Live In Until Your New Home is Move-In Ready

Moving into a partially finished house is stressful for everyone, and can really slow the completion process down. Landscaping and basement completions are probably the only things this excludes. Apart from that, plan on staying put until your new home build in BC is complete, as this will help speed things up and alleviate unnecessary stress too.

Additional Tips for Building a Custom Home

Make Storage a Priority – oddly enough, it is one of those forgotten details home builders fail to mention to their clients. Whether creating immediate storage within a kitchen, bathroom or hall closet; or reminding them about added storage for larger seasonal items – be sure to account for storage space when making your home building plans.

You Can Never Be Too Fixated on Fixture – often times it’s the small details that make the biggest difference, and fixtures are those small details that tie a home together. Think timeless over trendy, light over dark and personality-driven over friend/family influenced. This is YOUR home and YOUR custom-build, so ensure it reflects YOU!

Go Neutral with a Side of Accents – design regrets are a pain to fix, so by going neutral you are far less likely to have regrets. Statement walls, such as a single painted wall in the living room, wainscoting in the bathroom or a wood accent wall behind the fireplace, are all doable accents after the fact. But sometimes, you need to see the finished product before adding the finishing features.

We won’t sugar-coat it – building a custom home in Langley or the surrounding areas is a stressful endeavor, but we’re here to help you alleviate that stress and provide clear direction and guidance from the start.
