TOP 3 INDICATORS IT’S TIME TO BUY NEW TIRES

If you’re making a ‘back-to-school’ checklist, you might want to add new tires to it if you have noticed a change in the performance of your tires over the summer. Which is why we are writing about the ‘Top 3 Indicators It’s Time to Buy New Tires’, explaining how you will know if your vehicle is due!

Tire Tread

Your tire’s tread is important to the safety and performance of your vehicle. It helps maintain traction, diverts water from beneath the tire, and allows your vehicle to drive as intended. Once your tread is below 0.16cm, your tires are no longer safe for driving.

The easiest way to measure your tread is via a Canadian nickel, inserting it between your treads with the crown facing down. If the top of the crown is still visible, it is time to have your tires replaced.

Keep in mind, your tires won’t wear evenly, so be sure to check multiple checkpoints and have your tires rotated as needed to get the full lifespan out of your tires.

Bulges and Bubbles

The sidewalls of your tires are what you can see on the outer portion of your tires. A bulging tire means the inside is damaged, causing air pressure to mismanage your tire. A bulging tire should be replaced immediately as it poses a significant risk to your safety, and could even cause sudden tire failure – including a blowout.

Vibration While Driving

Vibration while driving can be caused by a variety of things, some of which include – uneven wear of your tires, imbalanced tires, or brake pads that need replacing if the vibration happens when you apply the brakes.

Rule of thumb is that your tires should be replaced every 6-years, even though most tires have a 10-year “guaranteed” lifespan. How many kilometres you can drive on a set of tires within that time and guarantee varies widely also, usually from 20,000 to 40,000. Some manufacturers even go so far as to guarantee their tires beyond that, but many factors need to be considered, including road conditions that you normally drive on, weather, driving style etc.
