What is a composite filling and why are they necessary?

Composite fillings are used as an alternative to amalgam fillings. They are constructed with a white plastic and glass mixture that makes them both aesthetically pleasing and less noticeable. JVR Dental specializes in composite fillings and recommends them when metal fillings need to be replaced or cavities need to be restored.

What is the difference between composite fillings and amalgam fillings?

One of the main differences between composite fillings and amalgam fillings is the presence of mercury which can be found in amalgam (metal) fillings. Since amalgam fillings are constructed with different types of metals, they do not blend in very well with other teeth and are much more noticeable. Composite fillings are white in colour which makes them far less noticeable. Although amalgam fillings generally last a couple of years longer than composite fillings, many patients prefer composite fillings because they are mercury-free and blend in better with other teeth.

What are the benefits of composite fillings?

As mentioned above, the main benefit of composite fillings is their natural appearance. Dr. Leana and the JVR Dental team ensure that each composite filling uses the best biocompatible materials and is free of any metals and mercury.

Do composite fillings hurt?

Unlike dental sealants, composite fillings may cause a bit of tooth sensitivity in the post-procedure recovery, depending on the individual and the condition of teeth. Thankfully, local anesthesia is applied in most situations which significantly helps to reduce the likelihood of pain during the composite filling process.

How long do composite fillings last?

On average, composite fillings last anywhere between 5-7 years assuming proper dental care and check-ups are completed. Although composite (white) fillings do not last as long as metal fillings, there are many health benefits that make them worthwhile. Your Langley family dentist will be able to monitor the condition of your composite fillings and notify you when they need to be replaced.
