What is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a type of prosthetic apparatus that is used to fill the gap where one or more teeth are missing. Through the use of a crown on each end of the bridge, the false tooth or set of teeth in the bridge are able to connect to both crowns and fill the space where the natural teeth are missing. Dental bridges are designed to help restore smiles and the ability to chew properly, while also helping prevent the remaining teeth from drifting out of position.
Types of Dental Bridges
There are three main types of dental bridges to choose from:
TRADITIONAL BRIDGES
Traditional bridges are the most common type of dental bridge, as they involve creating a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the missing tooth with a false tooth in between. This type of dental bridge can be made from either porcelain fused to metal or ceramic materials.
CANTILEVER BRIDGES
Cantilever bridges can be used in the event that there are only adjacent teeth on one side of the missing tooth or teeth; however, this type of bridge is not very common and is not recommended for use in the back of the mouth where it can place too much force on other teeth and damage them.
MARYLAND BONDED BRIDGES
Maryland bonded bridges, also known as resin-bonded bridges or a Maryland bridge, can be constructed from porcelain, porcelain fused with metal, or plastic teeth and gums supported by a porcelain and metal framework. This type of dental bridge is often bonded to your existing teeth using metal or porcelain wings on one side of the bridge.
Dental Bridge Procedure
During the first visit for your dental bridge procedure, your dentist will prepare the teeth that the bridge will be attached to by removing a portion of the enamel to allow room for the crowns to be placed over the teeth. Then your dentist will take impressions of the teeth in order to create a model for the bridge, fake teeth, and crowns. While your dental bridge is being created, your dentist will seat a temporary bridge to wear, protecting the exposed teeth and gums.
During the second visit, the temporary bridge will be removed and the new dental bridge will be seated and adjusted as necessary in order to achieve a proper fit. Multiple visits may be required to check the fit of the framework and bite.
